“Very well, then,” she finally said, and crumpled back onto the cot. Her neck arched back as she studied the white, patternless ceiling. “You have my word,” I said in the next instant. Then, like the click of a camera, an illumination of black and white, a picture of the four missing men, and now the missing Rianne Harte, flashed beneath my thoughts, followed quickly by an image of Dallas, hovering close to death. I’d always prided myself on my honesty, and each time I uttered a lie, a little piece of my integrity melted away. “How can I be sure you will release Kyrin?”įor one brief second, I hesitated in my deception. “Is that all?”Ī long moment passed while she considered my offer. Her fists clenched and unclenched, and her pale cheeks brightened with color. “But compliments are not what I want from you.” A token of your appreciation, if you will.” If he is to remain that way, however, I need an act of good faith from you. I stared her straight in the eye when I added, “For now. “He is unharmed.” Maintaining my casual facade, I leaned against the wall. “If you hurt him, I swear by your God I will destroy you and all you hold dear.” She leaned forward, anticipating my answer. “Is he hurt?” she half growled, half sobbed. You do remember the effects of stun, don’t you?” My pyre-gun gave me all the authority I needed. “Kyrin would never allow himself to be taken.” She gripped the edge of her cot, her knuckles quickly losing all color.

Preston presents each with rare insight and expertise. This is a story with a reservoir of events heroic and horrible and a fabulous cast of characters that includes scientists Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller and Hans Bethe, and world leaders Roosevelt, Churchill, Truman, Stalin, Emperor Hirohito and Hitler. She quotes a doctor in Hiroshima saying the mass of burned flesh around him smelled like "dried squid when it is grilled-the squid we like so much to eat" elsewhere, Preston relates that the potential explosive effect of a chain-reaction atomic bomb was first calculated on the back of a napkin. Preston is an impeccable researcher with a gift for choosing small details that illuminate and humanize the bomb's world-changing effects. She weaves together history, physics, politics and military strategies to convey both the monumental scientific achievement the bomb represented and, at the same time, the ethical and humanitarian implications of creating such a wild power. The story of how they came to be, and the race between the Allied and Axis nations to be the first to harness the destructive power of the atom, is wonderfully told by British historian Preston ( A First Rate Tragedy Nuclear weapons have been an immutable aspect of the world for the past 60 years. I've read it but now may need to find it on CD.) (I notice that he is also the reader for Moore's book Sacre Bleu. His performances are so good that I may seek out books based on his reading them. Morton brings the same amazing set of skills to this book, giving each character a separate, recognizable, and somehow wholly appropriate voice. If you read my earlier post about Moore's book Fool, you may remember how much I enjoyed the performance of reader Euan Morton. Hilarity then ensures as Pocket spends the rest of the book avenging his own death. The book begins with Pocket's murder, or at least attempted murder. This book continues the adventures of Pocket, the fool who is the title character in the previous Christopher Moore book Fool.
